Customize the prices to your local store (it comes pre-loaded with prices from Raleigh, NC), enter what materials you need, and then the calculator will spit out the estimated cost for your project without any math from you.
It provides projected costs for each of the major wood types available at Home Depot and Lowes: common board, primed pine, select pine, poplar, and oak. So at a glance, you can see how much your project will be if you choose to use oak vs. pine.
The budgeting calculator is created in Google Sheets. Upon purchasing, you'll receive a link to copy the calculator to your Google Sheets account. Once copied, you can use the calculator whenever you're planning a project!
I don't have Google Sheets. Can I use this in Excel? Yes! You can download the spreadsheet and use it in Excel or Google Sheets. Fair warning: it works in Excel, but it won't look quite as pretty.
This calculator is included as a bonus in I Planned That. To access, log in to the course platform at member.pineandpoplar.com, click into I Planned That, and scroll down to the "Bonus" section. You'll be able to make a copy of the budgeting calculator to use in Google Sheets.
Can I use this for boards that are priced by the foot? This calculator is for buying standard-sized wood that is commonly available at Home Depot and Lowe's (i.e. 1x2x8s). It was not specifically designed for lumber that is priced by the foot, but you can add custom items to the spreadsheet. Technically, you could add the price per foot of a maple 1x4 and then enter the necessary feet in the quantity column. But, if you go this route, it will not auto-calculate the pricing for different wood types.
Who is this calculator not for? If you buy lumber at a lumber yard, do not live in this United States, or you buy lumber by the foot or this calculator won't be very helpful for you.
